Health and Packing Tips for a Bali Family Holiday

A little preparation is the difference between a smooth Bali family holiday and one spent hunting for a pharmacy. Here is what to sort before you fly.

Bali is an easy tropical destination for families, but the heat, the sun and the occasional upset stomach reward a bit of planning. Pack thoughtfully and take a few sensible precautions and you will spend your days at the pool rather than in a clinic.

Sun, heat and water

The equatorial sun is stronger than it feels through the sea breeze. Pack high-factor reef-safe sunscreen, sun hats and UV swim shirts for the children, and treat the middle of the day as indoor or shaded time. Dehydration sneaks up fast, so keep water flowing and stick to bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth.

Health basics before you go

Check your family's routine vaccinations are up to date and talk to a travel clinic well ahead of the trip about anything specific to Indonesia; official guidance such as the CDC's travel advice for Indonesia is a good starting point for what to discuss. Pack a small kit with rehydration salts, children's paracetamol, plasters, antiseptic and any regular medicines, since familiar brands are not always easy to find locally.

Mosquitoes and small print

Mosquitoes are part of tropical life, so bring a repellent suitable for children, pack light long sleeves for dusk and use the nets or plug-ins your villa provides. Finally, do not skip travel insurance that explicitly covers your children and any activities you have planned — it is the cheapest peace of mind you will buy.

None of this is onerous. An hour of packing and one clinic chat, and the family arrives ready to simply enjoy the island.
