Rainy-Season Bali: What Families Should Know

Bali's rainy season scares off a lot of visitors, and that is exactly why savvy families should consider it. Green, quiet and good value — with a little planning.

Bali has two seasons: dry, roughly April to September, and wet, roughly October to March. The wet season has a fearsome reputation that it only partly deserves. For families willing to plan around it, the low season offers a greener, quieter and cheaper island.

What the rain actually looks like

Wet-season rain in Bali is rarely all-day drizzle. More often it arrives as a dramatic afternoon downpour that clears within an hour or two, leaving the mornings bright and the landscape a vivid, rinsed green. Plan your outings for the early part of the day, keep the afternoons flexible, and you will lose far less time to weather than you might fear.

The upside for families

Travelling off-peak has real perks. Villas and flights are noticeably cheaper, the beaches and attractions are far less crowded, and the rice terraces around Ubud are at their most lush. For families on a budget, or those who simply dislike crowds, the trade of a few afternoon showers for a calmer, greener, more affordable Bali is an easy one to make.

Plan for wet afternoons

Have a mental list of rainy-day options: an indoor cooking class, a spa afternoon, a covered market wander, or simply a long lunch and a film back at the villa. A pool is still a pool in the rain, and children rarely mind getting wet. Pack light rain jackets and quick-dry clothes, and treat the odd storm as part of the tropical adventure.

Go in with the right expectations and rainy-season Bali rewards families with space, savings and some of the most beautiful scenery the island offers all year.
