Getting Around Bali with Young Children

Bali's roads look chaotic and the traffic is real, but getting around with small children is easier than it first appears — if you plan for the pace.

Bali's traffic has a reputation, and on the busy southern roads it is deserved. With young children, though, the island is very manageable once you accept that journeys take longer than the map suggests and plan the day around that.

Hire a driver, not a scooter

Scooters are how locals move, and you will see whole families on them, but for visitors with small children a private car and driver is the sensible, safe choice. A full day with a driver is inexpensive by Western standards, and having someone who knows the roads, the shortcuts and the good rest stops removes almost all the stress. Many villas arrange a trusted driver for you, which is the easiest route of all.

Car seats and comfort

Do not assume car seats. They are not standard in most Bali vehicles, so if you need one, request it clearly when booking and confirm it will actually be fitted. Some families bring a lightweight travel seat from home for peace of mind. Keep water, snacks and a tablet within reach, because journeys that look short on paper can stretch out in traffic.

Plan around the clock, not the distance

The single best tip is to think in time, not kilometres. A trip from Seminyak to Ubud might be 35 kilometres and still take ninety minutes. Travel early in the morning when you can, keep to one big outing a day, and build in a long midday break back at the villa for naps and a swim. Work with the island's rhythm rather than against it and the days flow.

Move slowly, let a local do the driving, and Bali opens up beautifully even with a pram and a toddler in tow.
